Advanced Anatomy Weekend: Common Injuries & Medical Conditions

April 29 to April 30

Yoga is increasingly recommended by physicians as a supplement to rehabilitation for a wide range of medical conditions. Understand the anatomy of common medical conditions and discover practices to assist. In this weekend intensive we discuss working with focused populations and private clients, the anatomy of breathing, and the mind-body connection between breath and the nervous system. Also includes an overview of the Functional Approach, led Taoist Yoga practices, and dedicated time for questions.

Saturday Morning Session
9-10am - Taoist Yoga practice

What is Taoist Yoga? Based on Eastern systems of medicine and energy work, this class is the ideal blend of yin and yang, sure to inspire and balance any practice. Yang refers to strong dynamic and fluid movement sequences to challenge the muscular tissues of the body, mobilizing the energy and lifting the spirit. Taoist yoga practices will also include passive, relaxed Yin floor poses for deep tissue stretching, and time for relaxation and meditation. Expect a radically different perspective and practice.

10:30am-12:30pm - Fundamentals of a Functional Approach

Empower your practice from the inside out. Rather than a focus on a universal, aesthetic alignment, a functional approach focuses on what we feel in the posture. What are we exercising and why? Individual alignment may be as unique as your fingerprint, this is due to your uniquely shaped joints and skeleton. Learn the bones basics and their movements with ease. Simplify 208 Bones to 14 Skeletal Segments. This workshop will broaden the scope of teaching postures and variations. A great study for serious practitioners to take a deeper look, and necessary for yoga teachers of any style.

From the moment of birth up to the our last exhale, breathing is the most vital function of the body. It is the bridge between the conscious and unconscious, the body and mind, and must be controlled to progress in the practice of yoga both in and beyond the poses. This session will detail the physical anatomy of breathing, discuss respiratory physiology, and also include a guided practical exploration of the techniques of breath control that can help develop pranayama and meditation practices.

Sunday Afternoon Session
2-4pm - Advanced Anatomy of the Nervous System

What we are often told is beyond our conscious control, the yogis say we can access and harness through practice. What’s really going on in the mind/ body connection? Understanding the nervous system can greatly enhance our yoga practice and teaching. (WARNING! Big Fancy words zone!) Learn about Sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, reflexes, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, pandiculation, and other complex-sounding things that we are going make really simple and apply to our practice.

4-5pm - Advanced Anatomy Q&A

An open hour to spend with experts in their field! Matt and Erin have a combined 20+ years of experience as full-time professional yoga teachers, and draw from extensive Western education in BioPsychology, anatomy and physiology, medicine, music, and fine art.
