Meet a Teacher - Madi Reno

How did yoga become a part of your life? What led you to a devoted yoga practice?

I experienced years of what I can best describe as body dysmorphic disorder. I didn’t feel comfortable in my skin. Practicing yoga helped me get into better physical condition and I soon recognized the mental changes that were taking place as well. Now that I know of yogic ethical practices like non violence and self study I have an entirely new perspective on the world around me and my place in it.

What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about yoga?

Sometimes I hear people say they aren’t flexible enough to do yoga. That’s like saying you’re too dirty to take a shower ?

Name 3 non-negotiables in your life

Time for introspection.

Quality time with loved ones.

Creative expression through movement.

Also I really love to read books.

What is the pose that challenges you the most and why?

Koundinyasana 1 & 2

I find it challenging to get my shoulder under my leg and then straighten my hamstrings while squeezing bandhas and lifting through the chest in order to balance on the hands. Just need to keep practicing. Practice and all is coming...

One mantra to share with students

Aum gam ganapatye namaha. For the removal of obstacles and resolution of conflict.

I release that which no longer serves me.

Aum Aim Saraswatyai Namah. Praise to the Goddess of knowledge, wisdom and creativity.

I am open to experiencing my creativity.
