Meet a Teacher - Cynthia Brooks

How did yoga become part of your life? What led you to a devoted yoga practice?

My experience with different forms of yoga spans 50 years! (college classes, YMCA classes, community classes, ashtanga, water yoga, and chair yoga). Somehow Day Yoga became my safe, serene place when it reopened in March of 2020 with live classes. I did the 30 day challenge that summer, and by fall I was eager to learn about the many aspects of yoga. I began teacher training that fall. The vibe of the people at the studio was so illuminating and happy, people told me the weekends they spent in training were “transformative”, and indeed it was one of the most valuable experiences of my life. Much of my 30s and 40s were spent triathoning, being a high school coach and teaching water aerobics. Yoga teaches me to enjoy, body, mind and breath, something that going harder and faster in the other areas did not. I'm especially drawn to the spiritual part of yoga.

What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about yoga?

I think the biggest misconception I have seen is the notion that chair yoga isn't as valuable as regular yoga. Just as there are many types of yoga, chair yoga can be very gentle or strength and power-oriented. Those who haven't tried it really should. After all we are all only temporarily abled.

Name 3 non-negotiables in your life.

The three non-negotiables in my life are: spending time with my husband, being with my children, grandchildren, and great grandson, and of course, exercise.

What is the pose that challenges you most? Why do you think it challenges you?

Any of the yoga poses that involve balance are still very challenging to me. I'm happy to not loose what little balance I have. I am remiss in practicing but have every intension on doing more balance work (and I have my friend the wall). I'll be practicing balance the rest of my life.

If you had to pick one mantra to share with your students, what would it be?

My favorite mantra is - live in gratitude
