Meet a Teacher: Shannon Grauzer

How did yoga become a part of your life? What led you to a devoted yoga practice?

Yoga became part of my life in 2003 when I took my first class at the YMCA and I continued practicing sporadically over the years. I didn't really understand yoga and I was not flexible at all! I really dove in and started a devoted practice in 2015. I wanted the opportunity to immerse myself in yoga and try to understand the practice better. This then led me to sign up for my teacher training in 2016.

What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about yoga?

I think the biggest misconception about yoga is that you have to be “good at yoga” to do yoga or that you have to be flexible. Yoga is for every body and the only way to “get good at yoga” is to practice. Also, that yoga is not just about the asanas (poses).

Name 3 non-negotiables in your life

3 non-negotiables in my life... coffee, spending time with my husband/ family, getting some sort of movement/exercise/ breathwork/ yoga. All of these. Everyday.

What is the pose that challenges you the most and why?

Savasana is the most challenging pose for me. It challenges me to find stillness and allow my mind to rest.

One mantra to share with students.

One of the mantras I always share with students (hard to pick just one)...“breath into the space.”
